Celebrating International Day of Women and Girls in Science

TP - 02.10.2025

Every February 11, International Day of Women and Girls in Science is observed to honor the women shaping the world through science and inspire the next generation of female scientists. The aim is to boost the representation of women in scientific fields and address the barriers that keep them from equal opportunities.  In 2025, we mark the 10th year of observing the International Day of Women and Girls in Science.

Today, one in three scientists globally is a woman, according to UNESCO. While progress is being made, there is still a long way to go in addressing gender imbalance and driving equity and inclusion.

The Challenge of Gender Equality in Science

While women have made strides in science, significant barriers remain. These statistics taken from the UN paint a challenging picture of gender inequality across scientific fields:

- Women comprise 33.3% of the global research workforce but hold just 12% of memberships in national science academies.
- Only 22% of professionals in the pivotal field of artificial intelligence are women.
- Female researchers tend to have shorter, less lucrative careers. Their work is often underrepresented in high-profile journals, and they are frequently overlooked for promotions.

Then there's the issue of education pipelines. Despite the growing demand for skills in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), women represent only 28% of engineering graduates and 40% of computer science and informatics graduates globally. These numbers highlight systemic gender gaps that begin in educational institutions and extend throughout career paths.

Why Representation in Science Matters

Science and innovation thrive on diversity. When women participate fully in scientific research, the perspectives they bring lead to richer, more inclusive outcomes. Having women contribute to science also helps ensure that the fruits of innovation—be they medical treatments, technological tools, or climate solutions—benefit everyone equitably. This highlights why creating inclusive spaces for women in science is so critical. If left unaddressed, gender gaps can reinforce biases and limit the impact of scientific innovation.

How TP Women is Shaping the Future

At TP, we believe in empowering individuals to break barriers and achieve their full potential. TP Women’s initiatives are centered on empowering women and girls, celebrating their achievements, and inspiring the younger generation.

By investing in the future of women in STEM, we aim to show our commitment to fostering inclusivity and innovation! Together, we can dismantle barriers, create opportunities, and celebrate the immense potential women bring to science.
